Ray Roa Alonso is a contemporary dance artist who has used his work to explore themes of social connections, fluid realities, queerness, and representation. Ray is known for his strong non-linear artistic interpretation which embodies subtle provocations using movement and visual imagery. His work is evoked from personal stories emanating from colourful lived memories as a Filipino ‘balikbayan’ to surface stories of (trans-)formed identities in order to confront the audience with the affects of subtle discrimination, queer acceptance, and topical social discourse. His work is centered around his use of art to spark conversations about important social issues and his commitment to representation.
Originally from the Philippines, Ray began his dance training on the HND Dance programme at Newcastle College before completing a BA (Hons) degree at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. He later undertook postgraduate studies at the London Contemporary Dance School and completed the Dance Partnership Programme at the Danish National School of Performing Arts.
Throughout his career, Ray has worked with a wide range of choreographers, artists, and companies including Athena Vahla, Frauke Requardt, Royal Opera House, GöteborgsOperans productions, Fleur Darkin, Carol Brown, Juraj Korec, Low Key Productions, Khamlane Halsackda, MYKA, Art of Spectra, Mark Foster, and spent several years performing with balletLORENT, including in collaboration with Carte Blanche on La Nuit Intime by Liv Lorent. Additional collaborations include work with Lucy Suggate, Ingri Fiksdal, Amber Eons, and Asbjørn Du Pont.
Ray is also a founding member of the Copenhagen-based P-Noise Collective, where he has curated and presented dance and performance works by emerging artists from the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and the Nordic countries.
Alongside his performance career, Ray has collaborated extensively with independent artists and dance companies. Most recently, he served as choreographer for a production by MYKA, working alongside composer Cristian Vogel and designer Henrik Vibskov on Regnbuen, presented at the Statens Museum for Kunst and Dansehallerne.
Currently, Ray is developing new choreographic work with a South and Southeast Asian diaspora collective, exploring questions of identity, migration, belonging, and cultural memory. As part of this collaboration, he is choreographing a new solo work that draws upon personal narratives and lived experiences, further expanding his interdisciplinary practice across dance, performance, and visual arts.
He is also a member of the newly formed Telanovela Productions (DK) alongside choreographers Sanna Blennow and Escarleth Poso.
